Interestingly, the video at Lyness Heritage Centre showed that Orkney will
have a role in both nuclear technology and space travel in the future.
Because they were constructed before the era of nuclear testing and such like, there is much less background radiation present in the steel used to build the ships remaining in Scapa Flow.
From Scapa Flow... Because there is no radiation present in the steel, reclaimed wartime ships are being used to create high precision instruments, both in the nuclear industry...

These ships cannot last forever though, so the future of Hoy seems to lie with tourism. I hope this website has shown some of the historical tourist sites that you can visit in Hoy and some of the beautiful places that are a bit off the beaten track! |
